Sphere In India
All India Disaster Mitigation Institute's association with Sphere can be traced back
to its initial alliance as a pilot agency for the project in India.
The Sphere in India Campaign was launched by DMI in 1998, inspired
by the discussion on the need for "downward accountability", at
Active Learning Network for Accountability and Performance (ALNAP)
annual meeting in London, U.K. It is also an outcome of DMI's ongoing
performance rating of relief efforts in India since 1997. Further,
DMI complemented its efforts to promote and critically appreciate
the Sphere handbook through its national courses, local capacity
building cycles, in-house publications and material for training
as well as local meetings to deliberate on the use of the charter
and the standards in India and South-Asia.
Sphere
in Community
In the review of Sphere in India, it was realised that the campaign
led by DMI should focus on vulnerable communities, in both informing
them, feeding their learnings to the Sphere Project and other humanitarian
stakeholders. Thus the Sphere in Community Campaign that has guided
recent activities and will continue to set the future direction
of Sphere activities of DMI both within and outside the specific
framework of Sphere Standards.
